Please sign in to see more. RICHARD ANDREW,s - (my GtGtGtGrandfather).....What do we know of you ? ..... 1)You died on 23-2-1846 in Bridge Street Peterborough (according to your death certificate which we have)of Hydrothorax which you had suffered from for 3 weeks.Your surname was Andrews, you were 59 years old and an Innkeeper at the time.A person called "Fanny Plant?" of Castor was with you."She" could not write. Was she your married sister? Who was she? You were buried in St John Baptist church graveyard on 26-2-1846 just 3 days after your passing. 2)On your certificate, death was in 1846 - @ 59 years old therefore back to 1787 which is the year we "assume" you were born.I can only find one BIRTH of a Richard Andrew(s) in/around that year in the area around Peterborough and that was at Market Deeping some 5 miles to the north ........... BUT.......no proof 3)You married Maria(? Mary on computer 1G1 site)Holmes in Castor church on 8-5-1817,we have a copy of the Parish Record which clearly states her name " Maria ",your surname was Andrew, both of you of Castor parish, following Banns,by Curate, witnessed by Tho. Almond and Mary Bate. Were they relatives? Tho.also witnessed the next wedding recorded on the Parish Record. Perhaps he was a professional? Who may know this or be best to offer an opinion ? 4)Maria was baptised in Castor on either 7-3or5-1794, Dad=John, Mum=Eliz Holmes. We have a copy of the Parish Record.(?However the computer IGI site says 7th May 1794 and that your dad = " thomas " ? - conflict here?) 5)After your demise your wife Maria continued as Innkeeper/Publican of the "Cross Keys" ,east side of Narrow Bridge Street Peterboro' until her death on 16-1-1874.We have a copy of her OBITUARY published in the Peterboro Advertiser on 24th January 1874,Page 3.Maria was buried in St Johns on 22-1-1874.We have a photograph of the "Cross Keys" c1880 but the name above the door is ....William Cunningham Licensed Beer ???????..... It was 'next door' to the National Provincial Bank of England in Narrow Bridge Street & now in modern times the site of Peterboro' Council House. 6)Your 1st child was Thomas Andrew (my GtGtGrandfather) who was "publickly received" in Castor church on 23-8-1818(we have a copy of the Parish Record) following ......... baptism at Peterboro'...... At that time you were a "Gardiner". As no record can be found in the St John the Baptist Church Peterboro' parish registers of Thomas' baptism we assume baby Thomas was ill and close to death so a clergyman baptized him at home ?????? .Thomas married a widower SARAH SOPHIA MORLING (nee Sisson) and produced Richard b1855 ( my GtGrandfather ).Thomas died 13-7-1875 aged 57 and was buried in St Johns on 16-7-1875.
Richard b1855 is my Grandads (G.T.ANDREW) dad.
Where would a "Gardiner" work in 1818 and who would employ one ? 7)Next child was Richard Andrews baptised at St John Baptist Peterborough on 4-4-1821.This Richard died an infant on 12-9-1821 and is buried in Castor churchyard. At that time you had changed "job" and were a Publican 8)Sarah Andrews ,Bpt 21-8-1822 @ St Johns.was your 1st daughter, still a Publican. She married Joseph Gray in 1849 in Peterboro' had no children and died in 1892.
9)Maria ...Andrew..s..reus...,baptised 10-11-1824 St Johns,( we cannot find her Baptism on the computer IGI site BUT do have a copy of the Parish Record of the event ), you were still a Publican.
Maria never married remained an Andrew and died on 4-9-1902. 10)Letitia Andrews ...Lettie... bpt either 23-1-1828 or 23-6-1828 in Peterboro' she married William Smith in 1858 in Peterboro' had 3 children and she died in 1897 in Thorney
11)Richard Andrew c1832 ,I haven't seen a baptism record/date, he married Caroline Doughty of Marholm had 2 sons & 2 dau. He died on 21-7-1900,worked as a Plumber
12)1841CENSUS - you aged 50 (c1791) Maria 45 (c1796) Sarah 15 (c1826) Maria 15 (c1826) and Richard 9 (c1832) were together at Narrow Bride Street Peterboro' with a guy called James Wise 25 (c1816)a plumber ,not born in county you & your family were all born " in county" and you were an Innkeeper. 13).... BUT ... and possibly the only clue/lead left @ this moment in time is where in the 1841C is Thomas 1818 ? .Letitia (Letialia/Leticia/ Letteria)1828 was living in Peterboro @ 4,No.60,5 Crescent working as a Dressmaker.Could Thomas be with his grandparents,in Castor---PERHAPS,????. Extensive enquiries & searching have still not PROVED his whereabouts. 14)1822/3 - The Peterboro' Directory (1784-1841) under "Taverns & Public Houses" lists you @ 'Cross Keys' Narrow Bridge Street Peterboro'. 15)1823/4 - ditto
16)1830 - ditto
17)1830 - Pigots Directory for Bedfordshire,Cambs,Lincs,& Northamptonshire lists you @ 'Cross Keys' Narrow Bridge Street Peterboro'. 18)20th July 1837 in the Peterborough Poll Book you are recorded under " Ten Pound Households ".The figure of money quoted = £1.1s.0d.Does this mean you were "well off" ? 19)1978ish - VERBAL - Richard Andrew 1854-1931 told his grandson Vincent Albert Andrew (one of my Dads brothers & my uncle Bert) 1907-1985, WHO TOLD ME Roger Stuart Andrew 1949- , that 7 ....."generations"..... of the male line .........? had been buried from St. Johns Church.I have found / proved 2 of them i.e.Richard 1787-1846 and his son Thomas 1818-1875.I am unsure of Richard 1854-1931(My GtGrandfather) but Grandad Andrew 1875-1947 was cremated in Groby,Leics in 1947 just after WW2 and my Dad was cremated in Nuneaton in 1997. 20)1978ish - VERBAL - Vincent Albert Andrew 1907-1985 TOLD ME Roger Stuart Andrew 1949- , that he could remember when he was quite young his father George Thomas Andrew 1875-1947 receiving a letter asking him if he had any ojections to one of his ....... ANCESTORS ...... REMAINS being transferrred to another part of the St Johns Churchyard situated in the centre of Peterborough. 21)1901 MAPS Ordnance Survey (and i think the 1912 version) which i have an extract copy shew Narrow Bridge Street,Church Street, leading to Cowgate and St Johns Church burial yard in the centre of Peterboro'.
22)1926 MAPS Ordnance Survey HOWEVER shew ...... A NEW COWGATE driven through THE OLD BURIAL GROUND.
23)This fact substantiates the verbal information passed down to me by 'Uncle Bert'........ Can we find the 'REQUEST LETTER' ? Perhaps NROffice ? 24)At this time with all the research i have done i feel because of the ...'closeness' of ancient county boundaries viz Lincolnshire & Rutland being just north of the River Welland Cambridgeshire & Huntingdonshire being just south of the River Nene "OUR RICHARD" WAS PROBABLY BORN IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE but perhaps BAPTISED IN MARKET DEEPING in LINCOLNSHIRE especially as he was a (wandering?) GARDENER prior to becoming an INNKEEPER. 25)In the 1911 Census my uncle Dick, (Richard Frederick Andrew 1901-1968) who was never married but undoubtedly an " expert " on our Family History, obviously gained his knowledge as a young lad probably listening to the family seniors whilst gathered around the fire in the evening (no telly in them days!!!!!) from , (amongst others) Ann Drakard 1819-1918 ,my GtGtGrandmother and my GtGrandfather William Harris 1846-1934 as the family were living together in his farmhouse in Newborough just outside Peterborough.
************ Richard - who are your PARENTS ? ***************
